GraphQL is a query language developed by Facebook in 2012 for internal development and was publicly released in 2015. It is used for API development, allowing the client to fetch the exact data it wants, making it extremely easy to aggregate data from different endpoints. This is different from traditional RESTful APIs, in which the server determines the structure and content of the response.
