API-Driven Development with OpenAPI Specification Testing

Brett Bush
Brett Bush LogicGate

Managing a public API’s integrity and quality can be challenging for larger teams. However, adopting an API-Driven development model, inspired by test-driven development, helped our team overcome this challenge. By using an automated integration test to ensure the alignment of a static OpenAPI Specification file with the one generated from the codebase, our team was empowered to define formatting guidelines for endpoints, have an accurate OpenAPI Specification file available for each release and branch, catch backward-compatibility issues early, and develop API Specification prototypes prior to development. This presentation will explore the benefits of the API-Driven development model we adopted and how it can help teams maintain the quality and integrity of their public APIs.
